Windows Vista Updates

DirectX 9.0c (Full Package)

Applies to:
Windows XP, XP 64-bit, Vista (all versions), 2003

Requirements
Windows XP, XP 64-bit, Vista (all versions), 2003

File Name
directx_apr2007_redist.exe

File Size
49MB

Description
DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers improved security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If you had an earlier version of DirectX installed on your system, you will see little difference in available space on your hard drive following the installation. DirectX 9.0c will overwrite any earlier versions. This release also resolves a number of minor bugs and included security updates.

Important notes: This is the 'redist' version - all files are downloaded in one package (rather than an active download). DirectX is a crucial system component. It cannot be uninstalled without reinstalling your operating system (!). Released April 2007.

Microsoft .NET Framework runtime files 3.0

Applies to:
Windows Vista/XP

Requirements
Windows Vista/XP

File Name
dotnetfx3.exe

File Size
50MB

Description
The .NET Framework 3.0 runtime file package includes everything you need to run applications developed using Microsoft's .NET Framework programming tools (eg Visual Studio 2005). What does this mean for the average user of a computer? If a software author uses .NET Framework to write programs, then you will need this runtime package in order to install and use the software. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears 'This program requires .NET Framework', 'Runtime error' (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or '1645 Error Installing Microsoft .NET Framework, Return Code [followed by four numbers].' You may even get the wonderfully frustrating 'Setup Failure - unknown reason.'With a little luck, this latest version of the .NET Framework version 3.0 runtime files should get you up and running. Microsoft advise that anyone with an earlier version (eg 1.0 or 1.0 SP2) should also upgrade. Also, some bad news - Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 will not run on Windows 2000.

Windows Vista Critical Security Update for April 2007 (KB925902)

Applies to:
Windows Vista

Requirements
Windows Vista

File Name
Windows6.0-KB925902-x86.msu

File Size
1.4MB

Description
For April 2007, Microsoft released this patch a week early because it was deemed critical. It fixes many issues affecting the Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) whose main function is to handle the display of graphics on monitors and printers. This includes drawing lines, curves, fonts, colors and so on. This is a critical system component and leaving it unpatched will make it easy for a virus or hacker to attack your system.

One of the vulnerabilities lies in .ani files - which is a significant concern. Theses files are used to animate the cursor icon (such as the hour glass when Windows is busy). There are reports that the hole was already being exploited by hackers before the patch came out. The main culprits installed on unpatched PCs are key-stroke loggers. These pests record the strokes on your keyboard - such as bank account details or passwords and send them to hackers.

Note: The patch above is only for the Windows Vista operating system. Optional updates, critical releases for Internet Explorer, Office, DirectX or other Microsoft products are not included. Patches for these programs must be downloaded separately.

Windows Vista security update April 2007 - (KB930178)

Applies to:
Windows Vista

Requirements
Windows Vista

File Name
Windows6.0-KB930178-x86.msu

File Size
0.4MB

Description
This patch for Windows Vista fixes three different issues affecting the CSRSS. According to Microsoft, the 'CSRSS is the user-mode portion of the Win32 subsystem. CSRSS stands for client/server run-time subsystem and is an essential subsystem that must be running at all times. CSRSS is responsible for console windows, creating and/or deleting threads.' We're glad that's clear. Regardless of how much you understand about the update of the holes it patches, this security ownload is rated by Microsoft as Critical, so get it now.

Movie Maker 2.6 for Windows Vista

Applies to:
Windows Vista with a version of Movie Maker installed

Requirements
Windows Vista with a version of Movie Maker installed

File Name
MM26_ENU.msi

File Size
7MB

Description
Movie Maker is the Windows video editing software that is normally installed with Vista. Unfortunately, the version that shipped with Windows Vista (labelled as version 6, but in reality should be called version 3), has a few problems that stop some users from running the software. Here is what Microsoft have to say:'Movie Maker 2.6 is for Windows Vista users whose computer cannot run the Vista version of Movie Maker. If you get an error message that says, 'Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available', download and install Movie Maker 2.6. Movie Maker 2.6 requires a version of Microsoft Windows Vista that has the Vista version of Movie Maker already installed.'

Microsoft do not release Movie Maker as a standalone installation, so even though the Vista edition (version 6) may not work on your system, you must have it on your system before downloading this file. This installation will then downgrade Movie Maker from version 6 to 2.6. Not surprisingly, some usrs are quite annoyed that they have bought and installed an upgraded version of Windows, only to find they need to downgrade a component because it doesn't work properly. If you use Windows XP, version 2.1 of Movie Maker is included in Service Pack 2.

Windows Vista iPod 'Safely Remove Hardware' patch

Applies to:
Windows Vista (32 bit) and an iPod

Requirements
Windows Vista (32 bit)

File Name
Windows6.0-KB933824-x86.msu

File Size
0.2MB

Description
This one is so ironic, it took the combined genius of both Apple and Microsoft to come up with it. Ejecting an iPod from Windows Explorer or the Windows notification area (system tray) using the 'Safely Remove Hardware' feature may corrupt your iPod. In other words, the 'Safely Remove Hardware' is supposed to be the safest and most reliable way to disconnect hardware, yet in this case it can corrupt the contents of your iPod - the exact thing it designed to avoid doing. This patch fixes the problem so you can now use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' feature in Vista. It was a surprise that this patch came from Microsoft and not Apple.

This suggests the problem lies in the Vista Operating System and not within iTunes or the iPods. Perhaps Microsoft didn't trust Apple to fix the problem.

If your iPod did become corrupt because of this error, selecting your iPod in iTunes and clicking Restore in the iPod's Summary panel should return your iPod to a working condition.
