ResNet (Win 98/ME) - Network Configuration

Information provided here describes how to configure the Windows 98 or ME Control Panel to use network applications on a machine with an ethernet card properly installed.
The Help Desk provides only best effort support for Windows 98/ME.

If we are unable to resolve your Windows 98/ME issue, you may be able to find help at Microsoft's

Windows 98 website or their

Windows ME website.
These products are non-supported by Microsoft. No further development will take place on these products and security updates are no longer issued. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows XP.
Customers who use ResNet with Win 98/ME can configure their machines to work with TCP/IP applications in the Network control panel.

Note: if any changes are mode to your Network Control Panel, a Windows CD, or appropriate cab files located in c:/windows/options/cabs, are needed for the changes to work.
  1. Go to Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Network to open the Network Control Panel.
  2. The following three items should be the only items listed on the Configutration Tab under "the following network components are installed:"
    • Client for Microsoft Networks - If missing choose Add--> select Client--> click Add..--> select the Manufacturer Microsoft, and the Network Client Client for Microsoft Networks-->click OK
    • A Network Adapter (the network adapter will vary from computer to computer to computer, but can be identified by the green Adapter Icon)- If missing check the Device Manager (Start-> Settings-> Control Panel -> System) for the network adapter.
    • TCP/IP Protocol - If missing choose Add--> select Protocol--> click Add..--> select the Manufacturer Microsoft, and the Network Protocol TCP/IP-->click OK
Note: If any other items appear besides the above three items, highlight them one at a time, and click Remove. This especially includes Windows Logon, Client for Netware Networks, AOL adapter, IPX/SPX, and NetBEUI.

Also if multiple items appear (i.e. 2 network adapters, or 2 TCP/IP for the same adapter) Remove all of them, skip to step 13, and after restart begin at step 1 again.
  3. Also make sure that the Primary Network Logon: at the bottom of the screen is set to Client for Microsoft Networks.

  4. With only the three components listed, highlight TCP/IP and click the Properties button.
  5. Go to the IP Address tab and make sure Obtain an IP address automatically is selected
  6. Click on the WINS Configuration tab and select Disable WINS Resolution.
  7. Select the Gateway tab, and make sure no numbers appear in the Installed gateway box. Remove any that appear. Under the DNS Configuration tab: select Disable DNS.
  8. Under the Bindings tab: Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks has a check in it.
  9. Under the Advanced tab, put a check in the bottem box that say Set this Protocol to be the default protocol
  10. Any info in the NetBIOS tab should appear greyed out and is not important
  11. Click OK to go back to the "Network Properties" window.
  12. Click OK, if any changes were made, components will be added and removed now. If prompted for the Windows CD, put it in the CD-Rom drive, and direct windows to that drive.
  13. After all the files have been copied, Windows will ask you to restart for the changes to take effect. Click Yes to restart the machine.
