Upgrading your 4x DVD+/-R to a DUAL LAYER 8x +/- Burner

Using some firmware hacks it is possilble to turn your old 4x DVD-RW to a brand new Dual Layer 8x DVD-RW. For example* I have a Lite-On 451s that I have been thinking about bannishing to the "hand me down" computer and buying a new dvd burner.. However* using this hack I am able to convert this to a Lite-On 832s.

Before
Model: Lite-On 451s
Type: DVD±RW drive
Read Speed: 40x (CD) / 12x (DVD)
Write Speed: 40x (CD) / 4x (DVD)
Rewrite Speed: 24x (CD) / 2x (DVD-RW) / 4x (DVD+RW)

After
Model: Lite-On 832s
Type: Dual-Layer DVD±RW drive
Read Speed: 40x (CD) / 12x (DVD)
Write Speed: 40x (CD) / 8x (DVD)
Rewrite Speed: 24x (CD) / 4x (DVD-RW) / 4x (DVD+RW)

is comming soon let me know it you want it

Overclocking/Crossflashing by http://codeguys.rpc1.org/oc.html

WARNING: Know what you're doing! None of this is supported or condoned by the drive manufacturer. You will void your drive's warranty if you try anything listed here* so proceed at your own risk! Also note that not all overclocks/crossflashes will produce good results.

Once again* you will be voiding your warranty if you make use of the material presented on this page! If you don't know what you're doing or if you aren't sure if you should be using the stuff here* then don't mess with this!

Common Crossflashes Covered by this Guide
  • 401S@411S
  • 451S@832S* 451S@812S* 451S@851S
  • 851S@832S* 851S@812S
  • 812S@832S* 822S@832S* 802S@832S* 802S@812S
  • 1213S@1653S* 1213S@1633S* 1213S@1613S
  • 1613S@1653S* 1613S@1633S
  • 1633S@1653S
  • Slimtype drives: 421S@431S* R56A@852S* R56A@D56A* etc.
(bold = capable of double-layer burning)
There are actually many more that's supported than what's listed here* especially involving rebranded drives such as Sony drives; listing all of them would be cumbersome. Just know that it works for those drives* too. ;-) If you're not sure* you can ask in the

LiteOn forum.

401S and 411S users looking for 401S@811S or 411S@811S should use the

EEPROM Utility.

Crossflashing Instructions

Method 1: OmniPatcher (universal method; works for all of the crossflashes listed above)
  1. Download an unscrambled stock (i.e.* original) firmware for the drive that you are flashing to from either

    our firmware page or

    dhc014's firmware page.
  2. Download the

OmniPatcher and read the documentation carefully. For the best compatibility* please make sure that you have version 1.3.16 or newer.
  3. Load the stock firmware with the OmniPatcher and apply the crossflashing patch (and while you're at it* any other patches that you want). When you are done* save it.

    OmniPatcher with Firmware Loaded

    Saved Patched Firmware

  4. Flash your drive with the OmniPatcher-patched firmware that you have just created. If your patched firmware is a flasher (i.e.* with a .exe extension)* simply double-click on the patched firmware and follow the instructions. If your patched firmware is a raw binary firmware (i.e.* with a .bin extension)* please use

    LtnFW to flash your drive.

Method 2: Pre-Patched (only when a pre-patched crossflashing firmware is available)
  1. Download a crossflashing-patched firmware for the drive that you are flashing to from

    our firmware page.
  2. After unpacking the RAR package* double-click on the firmware to start the flasher. Be sure to select the correct drive* and flash.
Note: If a crossflashing-patched firmware is not available for download* please follow Method 1 instead (the crossflashing-patched firmwares that we provide were created by simply following steps 1-3 of Method 1).
Method 3: CGxx (only for @832S)
  1. Download a CGxx (e.g.* CG3B) firmware from

    our firmware page.
  2. After unpacking the RAR package* double-click on the firmware to start the flasher. Be sure to select the correct drive* and flash.
Note: For more information about the CGxx firmwares*

Updating to a Newer Firmware

If* after crossflashing a drive* you wish to update to a newer firmware* you must follow one of the procedures listed above!

Example: Let's say that you have a 812S drive that you had flashed to a 812S@832S drive using the VS0A firmware. If you want to update to the newer VS0B firmware* you will have to first patch VS0B with OmniPatcher's crossflashing patch before loading it onto your 812S@832S drive! This is because* deep down inside* your 812S drive is still a 812S drive* and thus* any 832S firmware that you load onto your 812S--regardless of what firmware is currently loaded--must be patched!

Reverting Back

The reversal process does not require the use of the OmniPatcher. Simply download an official firmware from LiteOn's website* and then use the

FlashFix tool on the firmware you downloaded. Then* flash your drive. FlashFix is needed only for the initial reversal and is not required for subsequent flashes; once you have returned to a "native" firmware* things would behave as if you had never crossflashed in the first place.

Example: Let's say that you have a 812S@832S running VS08* and you want to return to using US0N. You have the official US0N firmware flasher* so you FlashFix it and flash your drive back to a 812S running US0N. If* after returning to US0N* you wish to update to US0Q* you can do so normally* without using FlashFix.
