Ubuntu is a free* open source operating system that starts with the
breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months)* a clear focus on the user and usability (it should "Just Work"* TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.

Fast* Easy Install

Ubuntu doesn't have a pretty graphical installer* it has a FAST and EASY installer. OK* there are still a couple of places where you need to know what you are doing* but the defaults will work for most people. We have kept the distribution installation CD set down to one single CD* everything else is available online if you need it. On a typical computer* the Ubuntu installation should be done in less than 25 minutes.

Releases
Ubuntu will make a new release every six months. In addition* we may make an Enterprise Release every 12 to 24 months* which will receive additional testing.
Ubuntu releases work on a time-based release schedule. We release Ubuntu every six months. While that requires an almost superhuman effort* we have the advantage of a core team of full time Ubuntu contributors who do an excellent job of the base Ubuntu platform. We then depend on contributions from the community (that's you by the way) to make each release broader* slicker and more polished than we could alone.

Each Ubuntu release is supported for 18 months with security patches* fixes for critical bugs that could cause data loss* and extra translations.

You don't have to upgrade to the next release when it comes out* you can stay on your particular release for 18 months (skipping two other releases) and continue to get security fixes on a regular basis. After that* you will want to update your computer to one of the newer versions of Ubuntu in order to continue to receive security patches.

Upgrades are supported from each release to the next. If you wish to skip a release* and then update to the latest one* then it is necessary to update the system from your existing release through each intermediate release to get to the release you wish to run.

Enterprise releases

In addition to the regular six-monthly releases* the Ubuntu team may make an Enterprise Release (based on an existing time-based release) that has received additional stabilisation* polish and translation work. These Enterprise Releases will be supported for a longer period than the standard 18 month support of the time based releases. Upgrades will be supported from enterprise release to enterprise release.

Release schedule

The following are the current planned releases:
  1. Ubuntu 4.10 (The Warty Warthog): October 2004
  2. Ubuntu 5.04 (The Hoary Hedgehog): April 2005
  3. Ubuntu 5.10 (The Breezy Badger): October 2005

Ubuntu is distributed on two types of images described below.

Install CD

The install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer. There are three images available* each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) install CD
http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/ubuntu-5.10-preview-install-i386.iso
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
Mac (PowerPC) install CD
http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/ubuntu-5.10-preview-install-powerpc.isoFor Apple Macintosh G3* G4* and G5 computers* including iBooks and PowerBooks.
64-bit PC (AMD64) install CD
http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/ubuntu-5.10-preview-install-amd64.iso
For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g.* Athlon64* Opteron* EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.
